Where are you from?
Answer: Celbridge, Co. Kildare.
Why did you pick medicine as a career?
Answer: From the moment I watched Osmosis Jones as a child, I was very interested in biology and how the body works. After getting a degree in human physiology, I wanted to put the things I’ve learned to practice and help people as best I could.
Why did you choose the Diabetes Collaborative CTN for your summer placement?
Answer: I have always been interested in Diabetes and very aware of way it impacts people’s lives. Before this, I got the chance to work with Prof Seamus Sreenan on an interesting COVID-19 project and now it gives me a chance to work with him again. I know that working with the Prof and his team can be interesting. They always have interesting projects and after seeing the goals proposed by the impressive team put together by the Diabetes Collaborative CTN, I felt I had to apply and try to contribute.
What’s the one thing you wish everyone knew about diabetes?
Answer: It’s been estimated that as many as 1 in 5 people with diabetes are unaware, they have it.
Is this your first time in RCSI?
Answer: My first time in RCSI was my first day of first year. I didn’t go to the open day because I always think that the colleges are trying to sell me the “best” version of the college. Instead, I talked to a friend who had just graduated from RCSI, they told me what it’s really like to go to RCSI and that’s why I picked them.
Ways to relax are important in all careers, what ways do you have to relax?
Answer: Whether it’s coffee and a walk with friends or playing football for my team, Ballyoulster, I find exercise and seeing friends to be the best ways to relax. If I’d rather be alone, a swim and time in the sauna always helps.
Where do you hope to see yourself in five years?
Answer: In 5 years I hope to have completed my medical degree, an intern year in Ireland, a year abroad in Australia and I should be coming home to commit to whichever medical specialty I fall in love with.
