Why did you pick medicine as a career?
Answer: I am really interested in how the human body works and all its intricacies. I love the challenge of constantly learning new things. There’s always something new to discover, which keeps it exciting. My sister is 2 years above me in medicine and she was a huge inspiration in my decision to pursue medicine, seeing how passionate she was about it really enticed me into picking it for myself.
Why did you choose the Diabetes Collaborative CTN for your summer placement?
Answer: I had heard of Professor O’Brien and his work in diabetes, so I contacted him about a chance to work in his lab, and luckily, he set me up with a project straight away. The cutting-edge stuff they do really excites me, from the work they do in the lab to getting that research implemented into clinic and patients’ lives, it’s truly remarkable.
What’s the one thing you wish everyone knew about diabetes?
Answer: I wish everyone knew how diabetes affects so many parts of your life. Managing it takes a lot of effort, things like your diet and exercise are super important to avoid any complications. Diabetes is something that needs constant attention to stay in the best health possible.
Is this your first time in a Research Lab?
Answer: Yes, this is my first time in a research lab. It’s quite different from being in a lecture or in hospital but it has been a great experience so far, I have learned so much in such a short space of time. One of the things I like to do is to cook, and working in a lab is similar in terms of carefully following procedures and paying attention to detail. Just like in the kitchen, every step matters.
Ways to relax are important in all careers, what ways do you have to relax?
Answer: I took up Golf last summer, so right now my life is nice. I go to the lab early in the morning, home for dinner and then go straight to the golf course in the evening. It’s hard to be stressed when you are on the golf course most evenings.
Where do you hope to see yourself in five years?
Answer:
In an amazing hospital, close to the beach and a nice golf course nearby.
