Prof Francis Finucane

Francis Finucane is a consultant endocrinologist at Galway University Hospitals and an honorary full professor of medicine at University of Galway.

He graduated from RCSI, completed clinical training in Dublin and was awarded an MD from the University of Dublin (TCD) for his research type 2 diabetes in young people. Then he completed a four-year MRC-funded post-doctoral fellowship at the Institute of Metabolic Science in Cambridge, where he studied the effects of exercise on metabolic risk in older people. He was a member of the steering committee of the European Diabetes Epidemiology Group (EDEG) from 2015 to 2023. In Galway, he provides care to patients with severe and complicated obesity. He is the course director for the MSc obesity programme at the University of Galway. He sits on Council at RCPI and is a board member of the Irish Heart Foundation and the National Office for Clinical Audit. He chairs the Obesity Section of the Irish Endocrine Society.
